we are nashville | the nashville flood

As many know Nashville was our home for three years before we moved to NJ. This past weekend Nashville and the surrounding areas were hit by flash floods. Unfortunately the disaster in the Gulf Coast and the Time Square bombing have received all the media’s attention. Many people are just now hearing about the floods and the devastation that hit Middle Tennessee.

Here is a video an old co-worker of mine put together from the first two days of the flood. Also please view these photos of the devastation taken by AP photographers and the like.

Please dig deep to donate to the relief efforts. It is going to take months to repair the damage. Here are two links that are reputable (Anthony and I volunteered with HON many times while we lived there) Hands on Nashville and Cool People Care

Tide Loads for Hope trucks are coming to Nashville on Wednesday, May 12. The Tide staff will literally wash, dry, and fold clothes for our neighbors who need it. Please contact Tide at 800-879-8433 (press 0 for operator) and let them know Nashville needs Loads of Hope. The more calls they receive the bigger priority we become. (They’ll ask for your contact info.)

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to tour the grounds for sculpture in hamilton with the central nj tri delta alumnae group. It was the perfect day – weather was gorgeous and the fellowship was wonderful!

The beautiful ladies!

happy earth day

You can view my Earth Day post from last year. An update this year…

  • We still recycle everything that can be recycled in our area.
  • We continue to use cloth napkins. Our neighbors always laugh when we bring them out for our weekly cookouts.
  • I continue to use reusable shopping bags.
  • I have acquired even more Kleen Klanteens – I think I have a small obsession with them.
  • We have started to buy our food locally this year. We watched Food Inc., I’ve read both Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and Eating Animals and my eyes are now very much open. We as consumers have the right to know what is in our food, but big businesses are not allowing it to be made known. We as consumers have the power to change that by choosing to eat locally and support local businesses. I am becoming very passionate about this.
  • For my birthday Anthony got me the Shark Deluxe Steam Pocket Mop. I asked for it because our floors are disgusting and I hate mopping. I’m in heaven! I’ve had it for two days and I’ve steam mopped the floors twice. This is cutting down on water use (I use about 8 ounces of water for our entire place) and the pads are washable. ETA: I’ve had several people ask about using these on hardwood floors. We have crappy (seriously very crappy) parquet flooring and I’m not worried about ruining them (Our apartment is set to be torn down next year – that says a lot!). I did some research and there was mixed feelings about using them on hardwood. My mom has a different Shark model and hasn’t had any issues on her hardwood floors. If you do get it, I recommend getting it from BBB, using the 20% off coupon that is always in the mail, and if you have issues you can take it back. You can always try it on a small spot that isn’t noticeable to see if it works.

We need to be aware of what we do to our Earth. Leave a comment with what you are doing. I always love to hear them!

Happy Earth Day! That mop looks super cool. Do you have hardwoods? I would love to hear more about this! I think it’s great that you are taking so many steps to be green, too. We’re trying to get better as well. It’s for the kids, ya know? Even if it’s a small step, it’s a step, nonetheless.

birthday celebration

Anthony and I drove down to Wilmington, Delaware to the Hagley Museum to celebrate my 27th. It was very peaceful, we had beautiful weather, and it was just what I needed.

This photo is of the family home – Eleutherian Mills. 5 generations of the DuPont family lived in this home. It was built in 1803.

We also spent the evening with all our neighbors/friends cooking on the grill. I am so thankful we live in this great community – and that they all came out to celebrate. I’m pretty sure I got them with homemade cupcakes!

turning 27

I’m not sure if you gathered from this post that I’m a huge Wicked fan but I am. When I was first thinking about writing this post, two lines sung by Elphaba from Defying Gravity continued to run through my head.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same

These two lines really resonant with me as I turn 27. 6 years ago Anthony got down on one knee two days before my 21st birthday to ask me to be his wife. The proposal wasn’t anything special, but it was very much us. We have come a long way since our junior year in college and the excitement of being able to legally drink.

We have made two entirely differently places home, making friends and then leaving them, the ups and downs of marriage, the joys and stresses of grad school, the fun times of being able to see parts of the country many people only dream of seeing, and growing as individuals.

When I looked ahead to my future (not sure I ever dreamed about 27), I never pictured myself living in the northeast and being a photographer. I was for sure I’d be a nurse or something in the medical field. Strange as it may be, nursing is what lead me to photography. I was finishing up a few science classes I wasn’t able to squeeze in at OU at the community college in Nashville when I discovered they offered photography classes. I took several classes and voila! here I am today. I did dream that we’d be starting a family by this time. Now that I’ve reached 27, I am perfectly content it being Anthony and I. We have so much more living to do.

I have become a better educated citizen, knowing what is going on in our world and standing firm in my beliefs. I am passionate about federal funding for education, libraries, and healthier, affordable food options for all families. I am deeply passionate about reading and literacy. I also know that I am not perfect and have learned to accept me for who I am.

This past year has been very trying on me. I felt that my strength and faith have been tested many times over. Any type of addiction affects family, friends, and those around you, no matter how near or far. This is the first birthday that I have not spent it with my mom – due to the circumstances with my nephews. That is tough. Even at 27 I still want my mom around for my birthday. I love celebrating with her. That part of me has not changed.

Anthony and I haven’t made up our minds entirely on what we are going to do today, but hopefully it will involve some beautiful flowers and trees!

exclamation mark!!!!! | princeton child photographer

Seriously who doesn’t love getting emails/comments/messages/etc. with lots of exclamation marks?!?! When you see multiple exclamation marks, does it make you happy? Do you tend to think the person is on crack if they use more than one after a sentence? I am totally guilty about potentially overusing this gem.

I am a dorkess and went to wikipedia to see what was mentioned about the exclamation mark. Did you know this punctuation mark has a history? Direct quote from wikipedia (because everything that is written on there is the truff!): The exclamation mark was introduced into English printing in the 15th century, and was called the “note of admiration” until the mid 17th century. In German orthography, the sign made its first appearance in the Luther Bible in 1797. The mark was not featured on standard manual typewriters before the 1970s. Instead, one typed a full stop, backspaced, and then typed an apostrophe.

After reading that I am even more in love with it!!!! I can’t believe people couldn’t use it before the 1970s in type. They (the mysterious creator of the exclamation mark) had no idea the impact it would have on girls/ladies/women in the 21st century! I know each and every one of you has some kind of love affair with a punctuation mark – there is no need to be ashamed!! Let it out and be free from the baggage. The whole world now knows my obsession with !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And a quick photo from my iphone (using the crossprocess app) – does anyone know what kind of tree/bloom this is? eta – Thank you to Michele & Jacyln for the info. It’s a tulip magnolia. I didn’t realize magnolia’s came in different types – I only know of the big white flowers with the big green leaves. Learn something new everyday!

What a beautiful picture, I love those trees! It’s some kind of magnolia.
My husband takes the petals and puts them in his hand and makes some kind of popping noise with them.
Enjoy your exclamation marks, Kim!!!! =)
