five on friday | west windsor family photographer

1. I can’t believe it’s the first of May already! Growing up (and even until three years ago when we moved up here), the first of May always meant warmer weather and the end of the school year! SUMMER!!!! Most people have a good grip on when they are going on vacation but Anthony and I are still scrambling to figure that out. As a type-A, OCD planner, it gives me anxiety to not already know any of this. It always works out but man it’s stressful. Are you doing anything fun for the summer?

2. This week I finally got around to planting more seeds in our garden: okra, squash, and onions. I will get some bush beans out there very soon. I also have some seedlings I need to transplant. To find the time…

3. Have you guys missed seeing my sewing projects? I’ve been on a hiatus from sewing, not for a specific reason other than I’ve been busy. I have been itching to get back in, I’m hoping the summer doesn’t go by before I get back to it. I have all these thoughts in my head about making skirts and simple, summer dresses…one day!!

4. My love of reading is still going strong. Some favorites I’ve read recently (you can find all the books I read here: Room, Breaking Night (which I spoke a little about here) and The Art of Racing in the Rain. I’m not a big animal person, The Art of Racing in the Rain is told from the perspective of a dog, and man it got me! Do you have a book you’ve read recently that I should check out? I have The Tiger’s Wife from the library but I believe I have to return it very soon or else I’d start on it right away.

5. Spring is here!! Yes, I know there are many who aren’t fans of spring because of all the pollen and allergies but I love it! Everything is finally back in bloom and there is LIFE! You see people coming out of hibernation, going on walks and runs, barbequing, and the like.

To finish the post off with a photo of a beautiful dogwood tree from the seminary’s campus.

The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of my very favorite books…and I was surprised I even liked it at all and it ended up being a favorite. So good! I am listening to The Poisonwood Bible and almost done with it and it has been very good and I’m reading Molaka’i…only like 70 pages in and it has had me in tears several times already!

I want to see your garden! I am hoping my husband gets my garden built this weekend so I can start planting.

Beautiful picture!

Jaidean – I have actually read both of those books and they are high up on my favorite lists!

becoming a big sister | princeton maternity photographer

Heather had recently found out she was expecting their second child at our session in the fall and now here she is only a few weeks ago from meeting their newest addition! Little C gave us a run for our money during the session, she’s excited about being a big sister and is very much in love with butterflies and all things bugs! Thank goodness she is adorable!!!

mike | central jersey commercial photographer

Awhile back I did a feature on Poka Yoke Design and just recently Mike, one of the co-founders, approached me about doing some headshots for speaking engagements (hence the tie and jacket) and a few more relaxed/causal photos for their website. Long are the days of stuffy, stiff, and uncomfortable commercial photos!! Here we are on a golf course. 🙂

These are great headshots, Kim!!

smart talk women w/liz murray | new jersey commercial photographer

A few weeks ago I had the absolute privilege of taking photos and hearing Liz Murray speak during the Smart Talk Women series in New Brunswick, NJ (you can hear about her work at Homeless to Harvard or in her book Breaking Night). I remember seeing her on the Oprah Show years ago, in which she was awarded the first ever Chutzpah Award, thinking what courage she had.

As she states on her website, in her book, and during her presentation, she was born to loving but drug-addicted parents in the Bronx. Although I don’t know how she lived through it all personally as I grew up in a stable environment, I do know first hand the effects of drug addiction and what it can do to families. I had tears in my eyes several times during her talk and came home immediately to check out her book from the library. What a powerful, emotional rollercoaster. Many compare it to The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (which is another memoir about a highly dysfunctional family life!!) which I can very much see why. I highly recommend reading Breaking Night if you have a moment.

At the end of the talk, they do a Q&A with the audience. Thankfully Liz gave us an update on all those she talks about in her book. She has surrounded herself with an incredible family – they all live within 5 blocks of each other!!! In some exciting news, Liz and her husband are expecting their first baby boy this year! She is totally glowing!

earth day 2011

In honor of my previous Earth Day posts (2009 and 2010) as well as my green post last month, I’m here to share a few more things we are doing. Please feel free to post anything you’ve changed to honor our Earth. Also, visit EarthDay.org to make a pledge (it’s FREE!)

  • Last week while my mom was in town, as my birthday present, I received 5 pieces of All-Clad Stainless Steel cookware. I am in love with them! Why on earth did I have nonstick for so long? Now the dilemma is what to do with the nonstick pots and pans. They are in great condition. Anyone want them? I’ll sell them at a great price – there are 8 pots/pans + 6 lids!!
  • I believe we are approx. 95% plastic-free in our kitchen (minus things we buy at the store like yogurt, butter, etc.). This week, the Vietnam Vets came to pick up the last of our plastic leftover containers. I removed Suran Wrap, and replaced it with a natural wrap from Whole Foods.
  • I’ve removed all toxic cleaning chemicals from our home. We now use baking soda, vinegar, borax, lemons, Ecover and Seventh Generation products among many others. Our steam mop is still going strong so no chemicals are being placed on our floors at all.
  • I also have switched to Tom’s of Maine deodorant and toothpaste. I know that harmful chemicals are not entering my body through my armpits or mouth!
  • We are COMPOSTING!!! Anthony thinks I’m crazy but we keep the pot (which is a chamber pot that I got from the antique mall in Hopewell) under our sink. I try to empty it out every other day or so. Luckily, with our community garden, they have a great compost pile going that we add.
  • We have our little garden + we are participating in a CSA again this year to cut down on our carbon footprint. I also have a house plant in almost every room to reduce the toxins in our air, acting as a natural air purifier. And who doesn’t love to see something living indoors?
  • Although it’s not a stated policy in our home, I try to not eat meat of any kind several times a week. Being Catholic and observing Lent, Friday’s have been the designated day for the past few weeks along with other meals throughout the week. If you need some recipes for meatless meals, check out Meatless Monday!
  • Did you know that you can drop off your #5 plastics (yogurt, plant containers, etc.) at Whole Foods and other participating locations? Check out Gimme 5 for all the details! They turn them into toothbrushes, plates, and other kitchen items.
  • I haven’t purchased one yet, but have you heard of iGo? You can charge your electronics (phone, laptop, etc.) on the go without having to be plugged into the outlet! This saves on phantom power and your electric bill!
  • Instead of going out to purchase everything new, I have been hanging out at antique malls and thrift stores to see if I can find items that are on my wish list. I’ve been successful on several fronts, from new everyday drinking glasses, to baskets to hold our glass containers, to picture frames and more.
  • I also utilize the library systems like they are going out of style! Which is a good thing since I love to read!!! It’s been a long time since I’ve bought a book new and when I do get a book, it’s either from a book sale or from paperbackswap.
  • Random tidbit I read recently: Did you know that you shouldn’t smash the crap out of aluminum soda cans if you are planning to recycle them? The machines at the recycling plants blast air to sort out the different components. If your can is smashed it’s heavier and the air won’t be able to blast it into the right bin. Just a food for thought!

And to close this post, some beautiful dogwood photos from the seminary campus!

tales in gardening

As I mentioned in my Five on Friday post last week, we started working on our community garden. With that, I’ve been reading up a storm about effective organic gardening, what to do with my seeds, planning out what to even plant and where. We are splitting a plot with our neighbors as they’ll be gone for three weeks in July and we are participating in a CSA farm share again this year. At this time I believe we will grow onions, potatoes, one zucchini and one squash plant, okra, bush beans, lavender, parsley, rosemary and carrots. I know everyone does tomatoes but I think we will have plenty through the farm share and when the neighbors are gone in July. Let’s hope I don’t regret that decision!

Here are a few of the books that I’ve checked out from the library that I’ve found very helpful if you are thinking of starting your own garden. Most aren’t specific to vegetable gardening only but they have great information all-around! Talking Dirt, One Magic Square, You Grow Girl, and Grow Great Grub Organic Spaces.

And a few photos of the progress starting with our community work day as we expanded the garden.
