deodorant the right way | living the green life

I really am that girl now! Wearing homemade deodorant and proud of it! The recipe is super simple, I put it in a fancy glass jar (reused from some food item!) and it will last me longer than any deodorant stick will. All you need is 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1/4 cup baking soda, 4 tablespoons coconut oil, + 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. I use lavender. Stir in in a bowl and put it in a jar. Far warning: coconut oil will become liquid above 76 degrees F. No worries – the deodorant works whether it’s a liquid or solid!

I have been asked by several people about sweating. This is not an antiperspirant and I wasn’t looking for that anyways. Antiperspirants are chalk-full of aluminum. Aluminum in our bodies is very very bad. You really want to stay far far far away from that stuff – especially putting it near lymph nodes located near the armpit. Our bodies are meant to sweat – that is one way we get rid of toxins. Even though I sweat, it doesn’t smell awful. This is coming from a person who teaches Zumba several times a week! There are some times that I have to put on an extra bit before working out but overall it’s worked for me (and I’ve been doing this for almost a month now!)

Editing to add about applying it! I just put some on my fingers (you can sorta judge for yourself on how much to use) and apply. If it’s not enough, just add a bit more! Since all the ingredients are things you could potential eat, it’s not going to do you any harm. I wash my hands after I apply it (only because I can’t stand greasy hands!). Another item I meant to mention is about clothing. Though I haven’t run into this problem, I did read about it on the web. Be careful when wearing silk garments. Apparently this can cause discoloration. First off, I haven’t wore silk since I started this so I can’t commit first hand. Also, after applying the deodorant I put on a plain t-shirt to finish my makeup and to do my hair. Unscientifically I think this helps it not get onto clothes I wear for the day!

Keep the questions and comments coming!

Love this Kim! Thank you for sharing. I am going to give it a try.

Ok 2 questions:
1. How do you apply it?
2. If it is rubbed on like a cream, how much do you use?

[…] Pinterest, you’ve probably seen how to make your own “just about anything”, from deodorant to laundry detergent and more. One of the hot topics that I’ve come across on many occasions […]

randon + rylan | the loves of my life

Perfection with a capital P! Two for two on photos of the boys with Aunt Kim. Now if only they would have both sat in the same photo with me! Christmas maybe…

Randon was being a bugger (after spending the day at pre-K, he came home exhausted!) and this is what happens – tickle attack!

Boy has he changed since this time last August! He now goes to “big kid” school and is loving it (though every day he wanted to come home and nap, even with “quiet”/nap time at school!). I’m proud of what he has accomplished since my parents received custody of both boys last March!

love.love.love. them both!

the schmidt family | downtown oklahoma city

A beautiful Tuesday morning session on the canal in Bricktown OKC with my father-in-law’s brother Mike and his family.

Even though both Cynthia and Phillip claim to hate one another, they did show some sibling love!

lake time | oklahoma getaway

Man oh man I can’t believe it’s been a month since my last post! Get ready though because there are lots of posts coming! I’ve been quite busy, taking lots of photos, editing them and all, but just haven’t had a moment to blog! I am currently in Oklahoma for the week (solo this time), enjoying every minute loving on the nephews, spending time with family, and laying out by the pool. It’s a tough life, I know!

This past Saturday we went to Lake Eufaula (it’s been over 10 years since my last visit there and a first for the boys!) as our family friends have a cabin, boat and jet-skis. The weather was absolutely perfect, it never reached 100!! Which is saying something since every day in July saw 100+ degree temps in Oklahoma!

I am absolutely in love with this first photo – Randon and I actually have never had a non-iPhone photo taken of the two of us in his 4.5 years of life. That was way too long but I’m glad that we got a winner on our first try!

Before he got sick and slept on my chest for an hour or so.

(color is a bit wonky on these next two, but they capture the moment nonetheless!)

Check back soon for photos from Randon’s first day of Pre-Kindergarten, the boys playing golf, and a family session in OKC!

bonnie + nathan | princeton wedding photographer

Quick sneak peek for Bonnie + Nathan from their July 16th, 2011 wedding day! Before the ceremony, the entire wedding party went over to Princeton University’s campus as documented below!

A little bit of fun after the ceremony! (I decided to do a little funkier b+w post-processing, gives the feel of film!)

Love! What an awesome group shot!!

celebrating our country in style in philadelphia

It’s been very quiet on the blog this week as I’ve been nursing a sick sick husband. It’s fitting to mention it on this post as most of his symptoms started on the 4th of July. After testing and some unpleasant procedures, the doctor believes he had a very severe strain of E. Coli. Unfortunately we have no idea how or where he got it. After two and a half weeks, he is finally feeling better. Praise the Lord! Back to your regular scheduled post. 🙂

Our neighbors Jonny + Katrina invited us to go into Philly for the 4th of July Party on the Parkway celebration including free music (artists included The Roots, Sara Bareilles, Earth, Wind + Fire, DJ Jazzy Jeff, + special guests BOYZ II MEN!!!!) and the BEST fireworks I have ever seen. Celebrating the founding of our country in the city that it all started was spectacular and nothing short of amazing. I can now check that off the imaginary bucket list!

Here is a small glimpse into our evening.

Looking back on *some* of the crowd + City Hall in the background

The whole gang (bummed that it’s blurry but what can you do when you hand off your camera to a random guy!)

Katrina, Emily + I (funny how we all wore a different shade of blue without talking beforehand)

Looking at these photos you’d never guess my husband was in pain, okay maybe you can see it a little.

Incredible evening – no editing has been done to this photo

It is really hard to get pretty firework photos while holding your camera – it’s best to have it on a tripod (and to go one step further and have a remote on it so there is literally no camera shake). The last thing I wanted to do was lug around a tripod but I was still able to get some “decent” shots of the fireworks.
