may five on friday

1. Easter weekend Anthony + I celebrated my 31st birthday with a cooking class at Sur La Table in QuakerBridge Mall. While I will have a full review of our experience on the personal blog very soon, I wanted to share an iPhone photo at the end of our class with some extremely large whisks. 🙂

2. This past weekend I taught a Zumba birthday party to a larger group of  7-8 year old girls. I had enough hula hoops for an activity that ranged in color from yellow to blue. There were 2 blue ones and man oh man those two were the coveted hoops. I didn’t think much of it (come on I don’t have children!) until one of the girls came up to tell me why everyone wanted it – Frozen of course! It’s called Elsa Blue from now on ladies and gents. While I still haven’t seen the movie, the message it is conveying is amazing. Not only do we not have to have a “prince charming” in a Disney movie but it’s also centered around the color BLUE!! Yay for diversifying the color scheme for boys and girls. Elsa Blue it is!

3. SPRING IS HERE!!!! This makes me more than giddy. Dogwoods are one of my favorite blooms and I’m glad I was able to get out and capture a few photos before the frost got the best of them!

4. I’ve been reading a bit lately (which isn’t really that unusual!!) and actually have two books that I’d recommend. The first, Orphan Train, is based on the orphan train movement in the late 1800s/early 1900s. I plowed through it in no time at all. The Goldfinch, just announced as a Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, is a hefty book (over 700 pages!) but so far I’m extremely engaged. If you are looking for a good book, pick up one or both of these!

5. We are huge OKC Thunder fans in this house. This week, Kevin Durant was named MVP of the NBA. He is a class act and so very humble. His entire acceptance speech is long but here is a sweet moment when he is thanking his momma (and why he came to the sport in the first place!).

There is still time to book a spring family or child photo session with Kim Schmidt Photography. If you are in the Princeton area, and would like professional photos taken, now is the time to get in touch.

my first completed quilt

It’s been several years in the making, but I have finally completed my first ever quilt. After the conversations Anthony + I had about my making us a quilt, it got my tail in gear on finishing the handful of uncompleted projects sitting in the cabinet. I began this quilt in 2011 (after seeing the design on Bijou Lovely – at the time there wasn’t a pattern but she now offers one!), realized I didn’t know exactly what I was doing when it came to the actual quilting part and put the unfinished piece away. My mistakes would mean the seam ripper + I would be BFF’s. That was a daunting task in and of itself. In March of this year, I decided to get my act together, pulled the quilt out, got to fixing my mistakes, and I finished it a few days before my mom came to town (which was my ultimate goal – to have it finished before she got to NJ!). I’m proud of this quilt and dream of the day when we have a child that uses it as a play mat. I imagine photos in a field with said child and maybe it becoming a lovey. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves! In the meantime, I will use it as a lap quilt.

quick may update

It’s been quiet over here on the personal blog for almost 2 months – sorry about that friends. The month of April is always a whirlwind and fairly stressful time for us, with school finishing up, people interested in outdoor photos again (hello beautiful blooms and warmer weather!!!), my birthday, and the hubbub of normal life! This year was no different with a visit from my mom the first weekend, a jaunt over to Indianapolis for a photo workshop the second weekend, my birthday/Easter the following and several photo sessions and events mixed in.

Over the coming days and weeks, I’ll be sharing more about all of these happenings, some completed sewing projects + an update on our future. Thank you for coming over to this blog and reading my ramblings. I know it’s not much (and who knows, maybe no one really reads this anyways) but having a save space to write is important for me.

abby | princeton child photographer

Back at the end of March when the ground began to show, I met up with Sarah, Marcus, + Abby in one of the only spots that didn’t have snow for a mini photo session! You would have never known how cold it was, as this family made taking photos look like a breeze!

Sarah and I meet way back in 2008 when I first moved to Princeton. She is a fellow small business owner, designing greeting cards, invitations, and custom design, as well as a spouse to a PhD student! Being able to capture their family is a true honor and come on, they are an adorable family!!!

Kim Schmidt Photography is an on-location family and child photographer serving the greater Princeton area. Contact me today to book your photo session!

eva 6 months | princeton child photographer

It’s been 6 months since Eva+gang last appeared on the blog. Now Eva is sitting pretty, growing lots of hair, and coming into her own as the little sister! Photographing a family in their element at home is one of my favorite type of sessions. Jess + Vinnie opted to do an in-home photo session allowing us to read books, snuggle on the built-in bench Vinnie built and be crazy without stares from the outside world! 🙂 I love this session and this family – hope you enjoy!

The chub, the foot grab – for sure my favorite!!!

Now is the time to start thinking about family photos this spring and summer in the Princeton area. Email me to set up your photo session.

kelsey+marcus | princeton engagement photographer

With major excitement I’m back to blogging – first up with this incredibly adorable, sweet couple Kelsey + Marcus. They are getting married in Portland but wanted to do engagement photos in Princeton since this is where they met!

Get it girl!!

Going into a cafe on a Friday afternoon right before midterms was adventurous but we luckily scored the perfect table at Infini T in downtown Princeton. While they did a quick change a-ro, I grabbed a few details shots of the cafe.

My very close second favorite image!

And my fav…Kelsey makes taking photos looks effortless!
These two are hilarious – I wanted them near the bush and this is what happened. I left from this session with an achy side from laughing so much!

It’s always an honor to be chosen to photograph moments in people’s lives. Thank you Kelsey + Marcus for including me in on this moment before you head overseas for a year!
